Why NZ got an extra 6000 Chinese visitors

Thousands of extra Chinese and Australian tourists flew to New Zealand shores last month, making it the second busiest October on record.

More than 210,000 people visited the country in October, about 15,000 more than the number of temporary arrivals recorded last October, new figures from Statistics New Zealand show.

The eight per cent jump is owed mostly to a 6000 increase in Chinese visitors, as well as an extra 4400 Australians who headed across the ditch. Visitors from the United States and Japan were also up 2100 and 1100 respectively.

Most of the extra visitors were holiday makers.

The boost makes this October the second busiest on record after 2011, when 215,000 visitors poured into the country for the Rugby World Cup.

The report showed visitor arrivals were high for the 12 months ended October, at 2.82 million, up five per cent from the October 2013 year. The biggest increases were from Australia, the United States, China, and Germany.

Tourism New Zealand general manager corporate affairs Deborah Gray welcomed the results, saying they strengthen the positive picture being painted for the industry as it heads into the summer months.

The report also showed more New Zealanders are travelling.

Kiwis departed on 207,000 overseas trips in October, up seven per cent from October 2013.

This is the highest-ever number of New Zealand traveller departures for an October month. They took more trips to Australia, the United States and Fiji.
