Up to 100 new jobs will be created as the Qantas Group establishes new maintenance and training facilities for Jetstar Airways in Melbourne ahead of the delivery of its first Boeing 787 aircraft.

The facilities at the group's flight training centre at Airport West, will include a 787 flight simulator and will be "state of the art". They form part of an overall $100 million investment as the group gears up for the September delivery of its first 787.

Qantasboss Alan Joyce and Jetstar Group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka today visited the training centre with Victorian premier Denis Napthine and state minister for aviation, Gordon Rich-Phillips.

"The 787 has a strong connection to Victoria with parts of the aircraft manufactured at Boeing Aerostructures Australia's facility in Port Melbourne," Joyce said.

"Today's announcement builds on that link with with our Airport West facility set to house a replica of the 787 cabin door and a 787 flight simulator which will be used for crew training."

Meanwhile Hrdlicka welcomed support from the government which she described as "integral" to the 787 plans.

'New jobs will include cabin crew trainers, simulator instructors and engineers to support the entry into service of the aircraft and the establishment of a dedicated Jetstar maintenance facility at Melbourne Airport," she said.

The airline is leasing a wide body hangar from the Qantas Group which will be fitted out with appropriate equipment and tooling in order to carry out line maintenance of the new aircraft.

Hrdlicka revealed that 48 engineers and 10 pilots have already completed their 787 training with cabin crew the next on the agenda.
