Carnival gets behind Christchurch quest

Carnival gets behind Christchurch quest
By admin

Carnival Australia has pledged its support to the quirky quest of Christchurch mayor Bob Parker, saying if he succeeds in borrowing one of Australia's iconic "Big Things," the cruise operator will transport it to New Zealand.

The first phase of Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism’s Christchurch Reimagined campaign, launched last week, features three wacky video clips which follow Parker on a tour of Australia’s Big Merino in Goulburn, Big Chook in Mount Vernon and Queensland’s Big Pineapple, Big Macadamia and Big Cow.

His mission is to persuade each town’s mayors and city officials to lend their “Big Thing” to Christchurch to encourage Australians to visit.

In a video clip posted on YouTube, Carnival Australia chief executive Ann Sherry called the campaign a "great idea".

Although she wouldn't lend one of Carnival's cruise ships to Parker, saying they were "busy bringing Aussies to New Zealand," she did express a desire to lend a hand.

"If you can get one of them, I will bring it to you in one of our cruise ships," Sherry jovially promised.

The Christchurch Reimagined campaign follows recent figures which showed the city is still 70,000 short of the typical 400,000 annual arrivals from Australia (Travel Today, August 21).
