ATEC cost cutting on agenda for new MD

The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) is close to naming its new managing director after a preferred candidate was unanimously selected by the board.

And the council made it clear that reducing costs would be among the remits of the new MD.

In a member update, ATEC chairman John King said “significant changes” will need to be made to the organisation to return its budget to surplus.

“Over recent years ATEC has embarked on the delivery of a wider range of new programs. However, the extra revenues are less than the significant additional cost of the expanded structure required during that establishment phase,” King said.

He said the board has “streamlined” the structure to allow the incoming MD to “hit the ground running with a lean and flexible head office”.

“The new structure now also enables a greater proportion of ATEC’s resources to be focused on directly delivering members with value whilst encouraging the ongoing development of the new programs and additional revenue streams.”

King added that a freeze has been placed on recruitment with two vacant posts – general manager industry education and sector development and manager of government relations and communications – not replaced “in the short term”.

King added that ATEC is working on its future strategy with consultancy Sandwalk Partners.

The identity of the new MD is likely to be revealed in the new year after the board interviewed four candidates and unanimously agreed on one, King said.
