Emirates as been named the world's best airline by Skytrax, with alliance partner Qantas taking out the accolade for best Australia Pacific carrier.

The annual award ceremony, which took place at the Paris Air Show, saw Qantas climb back into the top 10 of global carriers, filling 10th place.

Meanwhile, Jetstar was named best low cost airline Asia Pacific and second best low cost carrier in the world.

"For both Qantas and Jetstar Airways to be recognised as two of the best reflects our investment in creating great travel experiences," chief executive Alan Joyce said.

He pointed to the group's efforts to lower the age of its fleet, its investment in training, new lounges and onboard product along with its safety and on-time records as contributing to a "superior experience" for its passengers.

"We know customer service is built on service and consistency so these awards are a credit to all our employees."

In addition to winning the top gong, Emirates scooped up a further two awards including best Middle East airline and world’s best inflight entertainment for the ninth year in a row.  

Meanwhile, Air New Zealand swept the board in all three premium economy categories while Garuda walked away with the award for best economy class.

Oneworld was named the world's best airline alliance.

The Skytrax World Airline Awards polled over 18 million business and leisure air travellers from more than 160 countries.
