‘Help stem tourism decline’ says NSW body

The Tourism Industry Council NSW has called on the state’s private and public tourism sectors to join forces and create new strategies to halt the continuing decline in domestic tourism.

Recent figures show the tourism situation in NSW is declining and the council’s Chairman, Ron Rosalky, said every year for the past four years, the number of domestic visitors to NSW and domestic visitor nights spent in NSW has dropped.

“And the trend is continuing to go south,” he predicted.

The Tourism Industry Council (TIC) NSW is the peak state body for tourism in NSW and the only group representing private sector tourism interests on state issues with members representing the accommodation, hospitality, attractions, conventions, travel and events sectors.

According to the National Visitor Survey, domestic tourism numbers decreased nationally by 6 per cent last year compared to 2004.

NSW performed worse than the national average, experiencing a drop in both visitor numbers and in its share of the market.

There were 7 per cent fewer overnight trips and 8 per cent less visitor nights than in 2004.

“We can no longer afford to be complacent,” Rosalky said.

“We must work smarter to capitalise on what NSW has to offer, and find ways to increase our market share.”

Rosalky has cited several key areas which urgently need addressing in NSW, including a better understanding of tourism markets and trends, the creation of smarter, well-targeted co-operative marketing programs, determining the value of tourism, working with low-cost carriers and the growing VFR market.
