Marketing boost for North Qld

Tourism minister Martin Ferguson has pledged $750,000 in marketing support for the North Queensland tourism market as it braces for a drop in airline capacity in coming months.

Ferguson said the money would be spent on marketing support for charter flights from western Japan and Tokyo to Cairns during the peak Christmas and New Year periods, as part of the Rudd Government’s $4 million assistance package for the tourism industry.

It follows the move by Jetstar to withdraw its Cairns-Osaka-Nagoya route from December, while Qantas’s 14 weekly Cairns-Tokyo flights will also be replaced by a daily Jetstar A330 service (Travel Today, June 6).

“The Tropical North Queensland tourism industry will face a challenge in less than three months when reduced airline services to Cairns will limit access for Japanese tourists,” Ferguson said.

“This marketing support will send a strong message to Japan’s travel agent industry that North Queensland remains a must-see destination,” Ferguson said.
