All-inclusive fares a gamble, admits Webjet Steve Jones
Webjet has admitted it is taking a gamble by converting all its international fares to all-inclusive pricing amid fears it could make its rates appear uncompetitive.
Managing director David Clarke said a survey among its customers showed “unequivocal” support for the move.
“Customers want upfront pricing,” he said. “We are taking a risk but we decided to bite the bullet. It is in the interests and in the spirit of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission but more than that, it’s what our customers want.”
The comments echo those of Expedia which also adopts the policy and claimed it could have a negative impact on sales.
Clarke added that calculating prices inclusive of tax was “a torturous thing to do”, given the complexities.
He also called on the ACCC to firm up the regulations and ensure all retailers were competing on a level playing field.
“We want them to nudge everyone else into a similar position. Goodness knows why it has taken this long,” he said.
Zuji and travel.com.au currently states taxes are not included, but does not specify how much until you begin the booking process.
