Airline passenger shot dead

A passenger claiming to have a bomb on board an American Airlines aircraft in Miami has been shot dead.

US government officials say the 44-year-old was shot dead by a US federal officer after fleeing an air marshal and then reaching into his bag.

The AA flight had just arrived from Colombia and was on its way to Orlando.

It is the first time US authorities have fired at a passenger since the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001, after which the number of air marshals on US flights was dramatically increased.
