Cathay in record 39-plane order

Cathay Pacific plans to buy 36 new Boeing 777-300ERs in its largest ever order for aircraft.

The Hong Kong carrier has also ordered three Airbus A330-300s.

Cathay said 16 of the Boeings would be delivered between 2007 and 2010, and the carrier had taken options on another 20 of the aircraft.

The three A330-300s would be delivered in 2008.

The order follows the surprise resignation this week of Cathay's chairman and the head of parent company Swire Group, David Turnbull, after just over 12 months in the positions.
