Branson floats Virgin cruise plan
Byline goes here

he Virgin Group now has the international cruise sector in its sights.

In an interview with the Miami Herald, Virgin chairman Richard Branson said he had been in discussions with Florida-based cruise industry executives about an alliance.

Branson, who recently acquired a new residence in Miami, told the paper he expected to announce the outcome of the talks within the next four months.

He claimed Virgin would offer a unique cruise experience that would “do to the cruise-ship business what we did with the airline business”.

It remains unclear as to whether Virgin would launch its own operation or seek an alliance with an established operator – a strategy followed by Singapore-based low-cost carrier Valuair, which late last year formed an agreement with Star Cruises to co-ordinate schedules and jointly market fly-cruise packages.

Cruise commentators speculated that any Virgin cruise venture would target the lucrative luxury market.

Any Virgin move into the cruise sector would come hard on the heels of low-cost carrier easyJet, owned by fellow UK-based entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou, which this year launched a budget cruise operation, easyCruise.

Meanwhile, Branson told the Miami Herald he was looking at Florida as a potential launch pad for Virgin Galactic, the company’s new space tourism venture, which aims to take passengers into space by 2008.

Virgin Galactic intends to charge clients at least USD200,000, and it claims around 100 people have already purchased tickets.

Branson said Florida was a candidate for Virgin Galactic’s headquarters given the infrastructure NASA had established at Cape Canaveral.
