Steve Jones

Australia was ranked in 12 of the 20 categories in a study of the world’s most successful country brands.

In addition to taking the plaudits as best overall brand (Travel Today breaking news yesterday), Australia came second behind New Zealand in the best outdoor activities and sports category and behind the US as the destination business travellers want to spend their holiday time.

It also feature in the top ten for resprt/lodging options (9), families (6), rest/relaxation (10), beach (6), natural beauty (7), safety (6), business (6), easiest to do business with (3) and conferences (7).

No other country was nominated in as many categories.

The study also revealed that almost 50 per cent of travellers become interested in a destination either through word of mouth (29 per cent) or the web (19 per cent). Only 6 per cent are influenced by a travel agent.

Once interested in a destination, two thirds of people research online with only 13 per cent visiting a travel agent.
