Alaska activities

Alaska offers a range of outdoor activities, from wildlife and bird viewing to wilderness backpacking and hiking, dog sledding and skiing, depending on the region and season.

FAR NORTH – incorporates the Arctic Coast, Brooks Range and Western Arctic. Its capital, Nome, is surrounded by a vast pristine wilderness. Seward Peninsula is home to wildflowers, moose, reindeer, caribou, birds and seals. An annual event is the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Traditional Eskimo culture can be experienced at St Lawrence and the Arctic Circle. Brooks Range is home to millions of acres of wilderness parks.

SOUTH WEST – incorporates Alaska Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, Bristol Bay, Kodiak Archipelago and Pribilof Islands. A naturalist’s delight, with brown bears inhabiting the hills and plains and more than 240 bird species. Landscape includes glaciers, mountains and rivers. The region is renowned for its fishing, especially sockeye salmon.

INSIDE PASSAGE – incorporates Glacier Bay, wildlife filled fjords and a lush island scenery, home to bald eagles, sea lions, porpoises and whales. It is also home to several Indian tribes.

SOUTH CENTRAL – incorporates Anchorage, Copper River Valley, Kenai Peninsula, Mat-Su Valley, Prince William Sound, Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Reserve. The region offers hiking, fishing (rainbow trout, salmon) and wildlife viewing with mountains, lakes and remote wilderness.

INTERIOR – incorporates Alaska Highway, Fairbanks Area, Mt McKinley and Denai National Park and Preserve. Forests teem with wildlife and birdlife, especially Denali National Park. The region is the original home of the Athabascan Indians.
