Website tracks flights in conflict zones

The United Nations are set to launch a new website which issues warnings about risks to aircraft in conflict zones.

According to a Reuters report, the website is a test programme as a result of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 which was shot down in the Ukraine last year.

Available to the public via www.icao.int/czip, the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) had been under pressure to create a system to protect aircraft from risks after the incident, and is hosting the new website, the report stated.

However, as countries are not being mandated to contribute information, in particular sensitive data, it is yet to be seen if the site will be as effective as intended.

Countries and states can submit warnings about risks in their own territories or elsewhere but the information provided must be available via public documents. Furthermore, if in the case of submitting warnings about another sovereign territory, the governments affected will be given 72 hours to respond. ICAO can then publish any objections as well as the warning.

The plan was endorsed by members of the ICAO last February.
