WATCH: Balinese tour guide busts dodgy currency exchange kiosk

Two hands, one Indonesian and one of Caucasian white handing over Indonesian banknotes to each other. Concept of tourist business profit, foreign investment in Indonesia, paying for the goods

A video of a Balinese tour guide blowing up at a suspected scammer has gone viral.

The video, which was posted to Twitter on Saturday, shows a European tourist trying to exchange Euros for Indonesian Rupiah at a currency exchange vendor only to be given half of what he is owed, according to Coconuts Bali.

The tour guide, who has been identified as Bonik Ingunau, can be heard saying “You’re embarrassing us bro … We work hard to build Bali’s reputation,” according to a translation by Coconuts Bali.

Bonik told Coconuts Bali that there are a number of dodgy tellers around Bali that will pretend to drop notes behind the counter as they hand over cash to short change tourists.

“I just want authorities to do something about it, so that it doesn’t seem like this issue is being neglected. It’s an open secret that these unauthorized money changers are scammers anyway,” he said.

“I’m a tour guide. I make my living in the tourism industry. Building a good reputation is not an easy thing to do, especially in this day and age. I work so hard promoting the safety and comfort in Bali, but there are these irresponsible people.

“It’s like they are assaulting all of us who have worked so hard to build that [reputation].”

The incident comes just weeks after Indonesia shocked the tourism community by proposing a ban on extramarital sex as part of planned changes to the country’s criminal code. You can read about that here.
