Visiting family and friends travel top priority

Family time is still at the heart of getaways with nearly half (44 percent) of Aussies planning to spend their next holiday visiting family and friends.

According to research released by Travelex, which coincides with the foreign exchange specialist’s History of the Holiday digital feature which tracks how Australian travel has evolved over the years, family and friends top the list for holiday destinations of choice.

Travelex’s Head of Retail for Australia, Daniel Simone, says the results highlight that nothing beats spending quality face-to-face time with the ones you love.

“With the likes of Skype, Facebook, and Snapchat at our fingertips you can’t be blamed for thinking family holidays were a thing of the past.  It’s heart-warming to see that more and more Aussies are choosing family-focused trips over flashy self-indulgent breaks.

“Australia is known for its many cultures with people originating from all walks of life and corners of the world.  With many Australians living abroad from their families, meeting up in real time instead of catching glimpses through a screen can often be more exciting than sightseeing or a luxurious getaway,” Simone said.

Covering trends over the past 40 years, the Travelex research also reminisced about holidays gone by.

Furthering the Aussie love of an old fashioned family vaycay, the research found 44 percent of Aussies spent their childhood vacations visiting family and friends while more than half (51 percent) of Aussies still get secretly excited about the prospect of doing it again.

“Family time is an important part of life which can often be overlooked and underrated. It’s brilliant to see visiting loved ones is a part of holidays past and present,” Simone added.

With currency rates currently fluctuating, to get the most of their trip Mr. Simone urged people to research exchange rates online at Travelex.com.au during the planning process.
