A Reddit user has captured footage of the terrifying moment a plane’s engine caught fire.

A Southwest Airlines flight caught fire in midair on Monday, forcing the aircraft to return to Salt Lake City airport just after takeoff.

One passenger told, who was on her first flight ever, told KUTV she saw “huge flames just coming right out of the engine”

“Suddenly there was a huge explosion”

Meanwhile, on the ground, Reddit user Ben McConkie was taking a walk when he heard “loud popping noises” and saw flames, reposts Fox News.

“The pilots of flight 604 operating today from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) elected to return to SLC after receiving a cockpit indication of a performance issue with one of the aircraft engines,” Southwest said in a statement.

“Following established protocol and procedures, the pilots completed an uneventful landing.”

Passengers were moved to a new aircraft to finish their trip to Los Angelas International Airport and the airline has apologised to affected passengers.
