Unlikely spot for world’s tallest hotel

The world’s tallest hotel is expected to open in 2019 in a rather unlikely place.

Switzerland will be home to the world’s tallest hotel in 2019, after Swiss-entrepreneur Remo Stoffel unveiled designs of a 381-meter structure to be built in Vals, the Swiss Alps.

In collaboration with US-based architect Morphosis, the hotel is slated to open in 2019 and will eclipse the current tallest hotel in the world at 355 meters, the JW Marriott Marquis in Dubai.

Reports claim Stoffel was inspired to construct the hotel by Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid.

“It is now home to the busiest airport in the world, tallest tower, tallest hotel, the largest shopping mall, largest man-made island, the list goes on,” Stoffel said, referring to his various trips to Dubai.

“Undeterred, Dubai stuck steadfastly to its strategy and last year it welcomed around 12 million overnight visitors and is now planning to accommodate 20 million visitors by 2020,” he continued.

“That inspired me to realise my own vision, by forming 7132 Ltd, commissioning this stunning design, which will be built in my home town of Vals within four years.”

The unveiling of the structure followed an international competition launched by 7132 Ltd (taken from Vals postal code) last June, when eight of the world’s leading architectural practices competed for the opportunity to design the hotel.

The hotel is expected to feature 107 guestrooms, a restaurant, café, spa and bar.
