Two Aussie tourists dead after tragic selfie accident

Pescadores beach, Ericeira, Portugal

Two Australians have died after attempting to take a selfie and falling off a cliff in Portugal.

According to local media, a 30-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man fell down the cliff at Pescadores Beach in Ericeira, a drop of 30 metres to the ground below.

The National Maritime Authority told Portuguese news agency Lusa that the couple looked as if they were taking photos before they fell, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The captain of the port of Cascais, 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, said he believed the couple lost balance while taking photos with a phone.

“We found a mobile phone [at the bottom of] on the sea wall which indicated they might have been taking a selfie when the phone fell – they leaned over to get it and fell,” he said.

Council workers found the bodies early yesterday morning whilst sweeping the beach. The couple is believed to have fallen from the top between approximately 1am and 6am local time.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade did confirm it had been in contact with the family of one of the deceased, but would not comment on the death of the second Aussie, as per Sydney Morning Herald.

Autopsies are being conducted at the National Legal Medicine Institute in Lisbon, but the police have ruled out murder as a cause of death at this point.

In the ongoing investigation, police will be speaking to numerous witnesses who said the couple were sitting on the wall looking at the beach before falling.
