Travolta flies in for Qantas celebration

John Travolta flew himself and his wife Kelly Preston to Australia to appear as the special guest at Qantas’ 95th birthday celebrations at Sydney Airport.

The actor/pilot and Qantas ambassador was on hand to celebrate with the airline he labelled the “most innovative” and which also happens to look after the maintenance of his Boeing 707-138B, which he bought in 1998.

But he didn’t fly in for the celebrations on Friday night in his 707.

“I flew on a Challenger jet, it was awesome,” Travolta told AAP on the red carpet with Preston by his side.

The actor has been the airline’s ambassador at large since 2002 and is pretty happy to have teamed up with the quintessentially Australian company.

“I mean I couldn’t be more proud,” he said.

“Imagine it’s been around for 95 years but what they’ve achieved as an airline is extraordinary, it’s the most innovative airline in history,” he said.

The party, which was held at the Qantas Hanger, had another special guest Travolta was particularly excited about – an A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

“I’m excited and glad to be here and you know, having dinner under the wing of an A380 with a bunch of aviators, I’m in heaven,” he said.

But as much as he loves flying, Travolta said he would never give up his acting career. In fact, he couldn’t really have had one without the other.

“I would never want to have to do that (choose between acting or flying) because acting actually financed flying, and I like creating characters, so I would miss either,” he said.

“I wouldn’t want you to take one away from me, I’m not going to let you,” he added.
