Travel insurer reveals USA as top of the pops for claims

Banana's peel is on the stairs - traveler can steps on it

With bills in the hundreds of thousands, and causes for claims ranging from broken bones to lightheadedness, Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) have revealed the most accident-prone country for Australians travelling abroad—America.

Topping their list of 10 most expensive medical claims for 2018, North America unanimously held the mantle of notoriety for Australians travelling abroad.

Home of the brave, land of the free—now home to a whopping claim of nearly $300,000 for a life-threatening scare.

After requiring cardiac surgery for a heart attack, the customer—in their 60s—was flown home with a non-descript escort.

Addressing the media after the release of the study, SCTI Chief Executive Chris White said that travel insurance was a “small but important cost”, which carried the potential to save on stress and expenses.

“Even on a short trip…a few days in hospital after an accident can interrupt your travel plans and lead to hefty medical bills,” he said.

Ahead of a season of cross-continental travel, the lesson is simple: be prepared and be mindful.

Stay safe, travellers.
