TripAdvisor chief marketing officer, Barbara Messing said, “These world-class museums provide an enriching experience that can be both inspiring and educational for travellers around the globe.”

Australian museums performed well, with Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria taking out first spot on the Australian list, and a further five institutions making it onto the top 25 South Pacific list which was headed by the Museum of New Zealand in Wellington.

NGV director, Tony Ellwood expressed his delight at receiving the top spot.

“Our diverse program of historic and contemporary art exhibitions and our wide variety of free public programs aims to inspire the community with a broad range of thought-provoking and inspiring experiences at the NGV,” he said.

The list of 591 qualifying museums was finalised using an algorithm that incorporated the quantity and quality of TripAdvisor user reviews for museums around the world gathered over a 12-month period.
