The life of a travelling daredevil

The life of a travelling daredevil

The first of the new Contiki Legends projects has officially launched – and it starts with jumping off a Mediterranean cliff face.

Contiki has partnered with international YouTuber Devin Supertramp (Devin Graham) and his team of extreme athletes to bring to life Aussie Contiki traveller Matthew Johnson’s dream of jumping into the Mediterranean with an epic cliff diving experience on the Amalfi Coast.

The footage is phenomenal, and shows off a gorgeous side of the coast you wouldn’t see unless your mid air jumping off it.

The travel co will be rolling out more Contiki Legend tidbits in the next few weeks where agents can also watch videos and get excited ahead of the 2016 Europe launch.

“Understanding the power of word of mouth and real life experiences inspiring travel, particularly within the youth market, last year Contiki’s #ContikiLegends campaign saw the youth leader hand over the storytelling reigns to its travellers, gathering real traveller stories dating back to the brand’s launch 52 years ago,” Contiki’s md Katrina Barry said.

“This year we wanted to make a one of our Contiki travellers travel dream come true, therefore to align with Contiki’s ethos of making every moment count, we enlisted the help of Devin Supertramp.”

And because not learning about Devin’s wicked travel stories would be a crime, here is a little exclusive Q&A:

You visited New Zealand earlier this year, where was your favourite adventure spot and why? / Where else did you visit?

Queenstown was by far our favourite city; it’s the adrenaline capitol of the world and is home to so many extreme sports and activities. We took a huge road trip from the very north of the North Island all the way down to Queenstown on the South Island, so we visited pretty much everywhere.

You’ve never visited South Africa before. What adventure would you like to have here when you do?

I would love to pull off a crazy stunt in South Africa that no one has ever seen before.  We have some ideas but I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet!

Where would you cliff jump (or “kloof as we call it) in South Africa?

As long as there’s water and some cliffs, we’re there!

When you travel, what are things that you can’t leave home without / what does Team Supertramp always travel with?

Our cameras and laptops of course, as we are always shooting and editing on the fly.

What camera equipment should an up-and-coming YouTuber invest in?

It honestly depends on your budget, but content will always win over quality.  There are some amazing videos that have been shot on a smart phone.  Buying a nicer camera is not the most important step.  If you have the money to buy a GoPro or a Canon Mark iii those are great starting options, but I personally started out on the Canon t3i which is a 500 USD camera.

Why do you think it is important for young people to travel and see the world?

You can learn so much about life by traveling and watching different cultures and people in their everyday elements.

Which destination have you been dying to film in (but haven’t gotten to yet?)

China

Where is left on your Cliff Diving Bucket List?

I am scared of cliff jumping personally so not sure that I have one ha ha. You’d have to ask the rest of team Supertramp!

What was your favourite Amalfi location to film in, and why?

Capri – the island was so diverse and had some amazing scenery.

Where are your top 10 destinations for adventure photography?

  1. New Zealand
  2. Utah
  3. Iceland
  4. Hawaii
  5. Australia
  6. Dubai
  7. Alaska
  8. Cancun Mexico
  9. Italy
  10. Tahiti

And the top 5 tips for taking killer shots?

  • Always take advantage of golden hour. The first hour when the sun rises, and the last hour when the sun rises. Those will always give you the best shots.
  • Use wide angle lenses to show the scale of where you’re at. The closer to the subject you are, with a wider backdrop, the more the person watching the video can feel like they are a part of it, since the wider angle lenses mimic closer the human eye.
  • There are so many people taking pictures/video of the world. Try and bring something new to the table. A new angle, a new perspective. What makes your picture different to all the other 1000 people taking a picture at the same location?
  • Find amazing talent to work with, the more amazing your talent is, the more amazing it makes your work look.
  • Make sure you do what you love. It’s hard to dedicate all your energy into a place/adventure you’re not passionate about. Do all the research you can ahead of time, make sure you’re stoked to be there, and then seize the day.
