The best food in the skies

The best food in the skies

From first rate coffee and on board chefs to complete restaurant service on long-haul flights, the Lufthansa Group sure knows how to dine in style.

Any airline worth its grain in salt knows plane food can make or break a flight, and travellers certainly notice quality in their food and beverage experiences.

That’s why the Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines have banded together to give passengers a little something extra when flying.

Here’s what you can expect when you fly with these guys:

Lufthansa

Lufthansa Business Class passengers are treated like royalty, with a new initiative that brings Restaurant Service to the skies.

Flight attendants adapt their service to individually respond to their guests’ needs and requests just like a top-class restaurant.

After the flight attendants have welcomed ‘their’ guests on board in person and by name, they take their orders and set the table with ceramic crockery. Meals are then served directly from the galley. Trays and flight trolleys are replaced by service plates.

With its new restaurant service, Lufthansa is taking another important step towards becoming the first five-star airline in the Western hemisphere.

SWISS

The SWISS Taste of Switzerland culinary concept brings fine dining to SWISS flights, with renowned chefs who create menus for SWISS featuring local specialities using only regionally sourced produce.

Think delicacies like dried meat, sausages and mountain cheese from cattle fed on alpine grass, made from recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The wines are chosen to accompany the current menu and are sourced from the same region as the guest chef. If it is not a wine-producing region, wines from the nearest suitable Swiss location are provided.

Top chefs change the menus every three months with specialities from their home cantons. The “International Travel Catering Association” has been honoured the concept with its Mercury Award.

During the flight, the finishing touches are added to the specialities created by top Swiss chefs and pre-cooked by Gate Gourmet. The flight attendants prepare and garnish the dishes in the galley, the aircraft’s kitchen, before serving this exquisite cuisine to passengers in SWISS First and SWISS Business.

Austrian Airlines

You’ve heard of the Flying Doctor, now meet the Flying Chef, the main man (besides the pilots) onboard Austrian Airlines.

A Viennese schnitzel from New York to Vienna? Or a choice of tapas, meze or Japanese delicacies on your way to Amsterdam? Exclusive DO & CO à la carte menus make it possible.

Your order will always feature soup and appetisers from the trolley, three main courses to choose from, beverages and a selection of desserts and cheese platters.

In the Flying Coffee House – another exciting inflight service – they serve a selection of 10 freshly prepared classic Viennese coffee specialties.
