Security ramps up for US-bound flights

Antalya, Turkey - September 10, 2016: Security and passport control at Antalya International Airport, Turkey.

Flying into the US is about to get a whole lot more tedious, with new security measure soon to be implemented for five top airlines.

The security roll-out will affect five global long-haul flights and will include new screening procedures for both US citizens and foreigners.

The shake-up has been orchestrated by President Trump, and will include possible security interviews as well as a tougher stance on electronics such as laptops.

So far, Air France, Cathay Pacific, EgyptAir, Emirates and Lufthansa have agreed to begin the interviews on Thursday, with a possible sixth carrier, Royal Jordanian, adopting the new protocol in January.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said, “The security measures affect all individuals, international passengers and US citizens, travelling to the United States from a last point of departure international location.”

“These new measures will impact all flights from airports that serve as last points of departure locations to the United States,” she added.

Farbstein estimated roughly 2,100 flights will be affected by the new measures daily and said the rules will see a “heightened screening of personal electronic devices”.

Happy travelling folks!
