A new railway line planned to connect Moscow and Beijing will cut travel time from its usual seven-day journey to just 48 hours.

The report by Business Insider claims the new $153 billion project awarded to China Railway High-speed (CRH), a subsidiary of China Railway (CR), will modify the Trans-Siberian route and will revolutionise travel between the two countries.

The 7000 km distance travelled on the direct route is three times the longest high-speed railway distance covered in the world, the paper reports, which currently runs in China between Beijing and Guangzhou.

Travelling at some 400 km per hour, the new line will also include a new stop in Kazan, an area now central to Russia’s economy.

According to BI, both countries’ prime ministers have discussed the project in bilateral meetings, giving the new route’s development “top priority”.

Half of the cost of the railway link is expected to be contributed by Chinese investors.
