Qantas unveils new menu to help fight jet lag

Healthy poke bowls, kombucha and probiotic juice shots…

Sounds like the swanky coffee place on the corner, right?

Well, it’s actually a list of choices on Qantas’ menu for it’s new Perth to London flights.

The 17-hour flight, set to launch on March 24, will also see the launch of a menu tailored to help increase hydration and reduce jet lag.

It also looks pretty bloody yummy.

That’s one of their new breakfast options for business class,  featuring poached eggs with kale, quinoa, grilled halloumi, pistachios, seeds and herbed tahini dressing.

The airline’s Creative Director of Food, Beverage and Service, Neil Perry, said the new menu is the result of a collaboration with University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, to help create a new approach to long-haul travel.

“Working with clinical sleep specialists, nutritionists and metabolic scientists, we’ve designed new menu options using delicious ingredients that have added benefits of hydration, aiding sleep and reducing jetlag,” Perry said.

The dishes will be available across various cabins and will feature special hydrating food like leafy greens, cucumber and strawberries, while ingredients like chilli will be reserved for specific times of the day to help with jetlag.

Not to mention a special bedtime hot chocolate containing sleep-inducing amino acids to help those who struggle with midair naps.

Academic Director of the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, Professor Stephen Simpson, said the next step in the research will involve using wearable technology and apps to collect data on sleeping and activity patterns, mental state, eating patterns and hydration before, during and after long-haul flights.

“Qantas’ new menu incorporates the latest scientific knowledge on nutrition and hydration and our scientists are excited by this opportunity to discover how the wide variety of influences work together during long-haul flights,” said Simpson.

Honestly, Qantas, you had us at hot chocolate.
