Qantas honours cheeky RWC bet

Passengers aboard Qantas’s Sydney to Auckland flight QF143 this morning were welcomed onto the aircraft by crew members dressed in All Blacks jerseys, the fulfilment of a wager with Air New Zealand that hinged on the outcome of the Rugby World Cup final.

A few days before the Rugby World Cup, which aired in Australia early Sunday morning, a cheeky Twitter feud broke out between the Qantas Twitter account and the Air New Zealand Twitter account. Qantas is a major sponsor of the Aussie rugby team the Wallabies, and Air New Zealand of the All Blacks – the two teams competing for the title.

The banter between the two airlines quickly escalated into a full-on wager with  original suggestions including repainting their aircraft in the opposite team’s colours (see above the above pic, posted on Twitter). However, that rather expensive idea was dismissed in favour of a slightly more realistic arrangement  – for the losing airline to wear the other team’s uniforms on board.

The All Blacks 34-17 triumph over the Wallabies at the weekend saw Qantas take to Twitter to confirm it would honour its promise.
