Qantas glitch gives bargain flights

It’s unknown exactly how many people cashed in on a technical glitch that resulted in Qantas selling return flights between Australia and the USA for under $600.

It’s also unknown at this stage what Qantas are going to do about it.

A source alerted Travel Weekly yesterday afternoon to the sale, after purchasing two SYD-LAX tickets for travel in February 2016 via US-online travel agency Priceline.com for $600 per ticket at around 10am.

The Australian-resident said she immediately received a confirmation PNR paired against her Qantas Frequent Flyer account and could even “request meal preferences” and added a ski-bag on the bookings.

Further reports surfacing since the incident reveal the fares were first spotted on US website Hopper.com indicating a “flash sale” but then also appeared on Skyscanner.com.au for travel on select dates.

A Qantas spokesperson told Travel Weekly the glitch had been found and resolved before noon yesterday, but would not confirm if the airline would honour the cheap fares or how many travellers had booked tickets.

“There was a glitch that impacted third party USA-based online booking systems this morning, as we made some fare changes effective 1 July for travel originating in Australia.”

“These mistake fares were incorrectly offered and have been removed from sale. The glitch was fixed at 11.30am AEST and we’re currently following up affected bookings.”

“Qantas.com and other third party Australian-based online booking systems were not affected,” a Qantas spokesperson said.

The source told Travel Weekly this morning she has yet to be contacted by Qantas and is expecting hoping to take the bargain ski-holiday in the new year.
