Midweek interview with Six Senses Fiji’s Frans Westraadt

This week, the general manager of Six Senses Fiji spills the beans on the time he was chased by a hyena and gave his boss a schnitzel made of cardboard. We assume the two are unrelated.

The challenge for the industry is…

A reduction in the number of flights in and out of Fiji, external political impact and an increase in last-minute holidays/changes to holiday plans by consumers.

The things I like about my job are…

The freedom. I love helping others have a fabulous time and I am very lucky to live in exclusive paradise destinations.

And the frustrations are…

Not enough ice cream for me!

If I didn’t work in travel, I would be…

A veterinarian or a pilot.

My favourite airline is…

Qatar.

My proudest moment was…

I once volunteered at a retirement home for Christmas and NY.  It was incredible to help other people and share special moments with them. I was proud of the time I spent there.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was…

I made a schnitzel out of a cardboard box and gave it to my old general manager!

I try to relax by…

Going to the gym, walking, swimming and diving.

The last time I feared for my life was…

Being chased by a hyena in Namibia!

If I can, I always try to avoid…

Gossip.

I really wish I had…

More holiday time for myself.

The best advice I’ve ever received was…

If you want something done, do it yourself.

I don’t understand why people…

Don’t invest more time and energy into protecting the environment.

My greatest weakness is…

Food.

And my greatest strength is…

I am a very positive and happy person.

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would…

Go back to school and study aviation.

If I was prime minister, I would…

Try to unite nations.

If I could be someone else for one day, I would be…

Usain Bolt on the day of a 100-metre sprint final.

I’ve always wanted to travel to…

Greenland.

My favourite holiday was…

Skeleton Coast, Namibia.
