Midweek Interview with Peter Power

Midweek Interview with Peter Power

We talk to the General Manager for Australia and NZ for AVIAREPS, who is now representing Ecuador Tourism in this region.

The challenge for the industry is… Remaining  relevant and profitable. And competing with other industries that traditionally pay higher wages

The things I like about my job… What’s not to like about travel? And I’ve found that  most people in this industry are passionate  and incredibly generous and friendly.

If I didn’t work in travel I would be… Running a small beachside bar with great live music and daiquiris to die for, somewhere in Ecuador or South East Asia.

Favourite airline? I’m not gonna’ fall for that one. They are all great.

My proudest moment was… Waving my 2 kids from the nest as decent, engaging human beings.

I try to relax by… Photographing, ocean swimming, bike riding and trekking whenever I can.

The last time I feared for my life was… When I fell off  a mountain trekking in Nepal . The helicopter evac didn’t  fill me with much confidence either.

If I can, I always try to avoid… Big drunk angry men and the edge of very steep mountains .

I really wish I had… A face that was good for TV and not just on the phone. A travel agent once said to me, “Oh you’re Peter Power. You sound so good looking on the phone.” Really!

The best advice I’ve ever received was… It wasn’t advice as such  but John Lennon nailed it when he said, “life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans.”

My greatest weakness is… I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

And my greatest strength is… I try and see the humanity in everyone.

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would… Aside from travel? Are you kidding? Assist the poor kids in Nepal who are slaves in the carpet factories. GRRRR!

If I was prime minister I would… Call a royal commission on those who have mistreated refugee kids and lock them up.

If I could be someone else for one day I would be… Bill Murray in Groundhog  Day.

I’ve always wanted to travel to… All over South America and Iceland.

My favourite holiday was… Walking in the Himalayas for the first time. It changed me forever.
