Luxury cruise influx a win for Australia

The imminent influx of luxury cruise lines to Australian waters has been heralded as great news for Australian tourism with cruise lines such as Azamara and Silversea spending more time in port and delivering a greater economic boost to local operators.

Ground operators, tour providers, attractions and restaurants all stand to benefit, according to Australian Cruise Association chief executive Jill Abel, with regional and more remote ports also to gain.

“Luxury cruisers are motivated by new experiences rather than new things,” she said.

“For Australia, that means immersing them in Indigenous cultural experiences, engaging bespoke services for private or small group touring, chartering scenic flights into more remote areas and including local arts, specialist retail and gourmet experiences into their Australian adventure.”

Abel’s comments come as Azamara announced it would launch an inaugural round the world sailing from Australia in 2018, with the boutique cruise line to make its Australian debut in Cairns this December.
