Lufthansa looks to drug test pilots

Lufthansa ceo says he wants to adopt unannounced tests to check pilots for prescription drugs in a bid to improve air safety.

Ceo Carsten Spohr told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung the proposed spot checks if approved will be set up by a task force by Germany’s airline industry in the wake of the Germanwings crash in March, which prosecutors believe was a deliberate act by the aircraft’s co-pilot.

The Germanwings crash killed all 149 people on board, after co-pilot Andreas Lubitz hid psychological problems from his employer.

“Insights into the co-pilots motives could come out of a so-called psychological autopsy that will be done as part of prosecutors’ investigation now,” Spohr told FAZ.
