Australian airport strikes, passengers affected

Passengers travelling into and out of Australia on Monday August 3 are in for a rude shock, with strike action set to cause a number of delays.

Community and Public Sector Union workers in the Department of Immigration and Border Protection will walk off the job on Monday for a series of rolling four-hour work stoppages over what they say are cuts to wages and conditions pushed by the federal government.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) will walk off the job in a proposed series of rolling four-hour stoppages to protest workplace conditions and salaries.

For passengers with international end-points, the major impact is expected in the peak time of Monday morning, but is not expected to affect domestic services at this stage.

Agents should advise any clients travelling overseas on Monday to allow at least three hours before departure to check-in to flights and clear customs and immigration, unless otherwise advised by their carrier.

According to Government News, the show of force by the CPSU comes as the union continues to accuse the government of trying to deliberately force down take-home pay for many public servants, especially those who were formerly with Customs, by around $8000 a year by removing longstanding allowances and entitlements.

However the union stressed that any of its members “who have essential national security, counter-terrorism and specialist biosecurity hazard roles in DIBP and the Department of Agriculture will be exempt from taking action.”

    1. are these union organisers nuts ? The standard of living in Australia is/has to drop. Prices will increase & wages will decrease. No one anywhere should be getting a payrise right now.
