A truck driver has been arrested and is being called an “idiot” on social media after he drove over a famous Peruvian ruin.
The incident happened at Peru’s 2000-year-old Nazca Lines, a grouping of drawings only visible from above ground which depict ritualistic scenes and animals.
The lines are listed as a UN World Heritage site with signs encouraging its protection lining the site’s parametre.According to News.com, Flores Vigo was arrested after he allegedly ignored warning signage.
The drive through has left the site with tire marks spreading over an area of 100 metres, damaging three different images.
A spokesperson from Ica branch of Peru’s Ministry of Culture, Johnny Isla, said: “While the Culture Ministry monitors areas with the largest concentration of geoglyphs every day, it [the site] may not be fully protected.”
“Entry and transit are possible through valleys and streams where the archaeological area spreads out.”
People have taken to Twitter to express anger over the act with some calling Vigo a “moron”.
