Hugos closure ‘death of the Cross’

Hugos closure ‘death of the Cross’

One of Sydney’s best known nightspots, Hugos Lounge, is set to close after being placed into voluntary administration earlier this week. The popular venue suffered a 60 per cent revenue downturn since the NSW government imposed 1.30am lockouts.

Hugos joins venues such as Goldfish Bar and Soho that have closed their doors following the introduction of the lockout laws in February 2014.

Actor David Wenham will later this year direct his first film, Love Machine, which is set in Kings Cross, not far from where he lives.

“It’s a portrait of two things: it’s a portrait of loneliness seen through a few different eyes and it’s also a portrait of a suburb, which is Kings Cross, which is essentially disappearing,” he told AAP.

“Kings Cross as what you would think your perception is will be gone by next year, there will be no more Kings Cross.”

Wenham said street traffic in the iconic entertainment district has dropped by 85 per cent since the lockout laws have been in place.

“I filmed up there the other night,” he said.

“All along Darlinghurst Road the most prevalent thing in terms of signage are For Lease signs.”
