The glitz and glamour of Tinseltown is undeniable, and everyone who visits wants to experience the city like a celebrity.

But while sexy L.A. with its diverse neighbourhoods, including iconic Hollywood, is the ultimate destination, there’s no point getting excited until you know how to get there. And in style!

American Airlines

AU-LAX services: Commencing 19 December 2015, American Airlines will operate its state-of-the-art, flagship Boeing 777-300ER on its new daily, nonstop flight from Sydney to Los Angeles.

Classes offered: American Airlines operates its aircraft with First, Business and Economy class. Considered one of the most comfortable and popular First Class seats in the industry, the 777-300 features an enhanced version of the Flagship Suite seat that transforms into a fully lie flat six-foot, eight-inch bed with drop-down armrests.

Business Class Cabin is arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration and outfitted with fully lie-flat seats, all with direct aisle access. Each Business Class passenger will be treated to closed-toe slippers and an amenity kit, while the main cabin offers additional legroom, a 9 inch touchscreen and complimentary beer and wine.

Highlights: First Class customers can choose from new menu selections including the introduction of a soup option and a customised pasta entrée – a first for any airline. First class customers will also be offered a wine sampling and a tasting card to assist in their selections for the remainder of the flight.

In December 2014, American Airlines’ announced an investment of more than $2 billion in the customer experience. These investments include more fully lie-flat seats; upgraded aircraft interiors; more international Wi-Fi; more in-flight entertainment options and charging power for customers in all cabins.

Delta Air Lines

AU-LAX services: Delta operates daily nonstop flights between Sydney international Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.  In addition, Delta and Virgin Australia have a Joint Venture partnership that offers three daily flights between Australia and L.A. aboard its Boeing 777-200LR.

Classes offered: Delta Air Lines offers the classes of Delta One, with 180-degree flat-bed seats with direct aisle access, Westin Heavenly In-Flight Bedding and TUMI amenity kits, and premium entertainment, as well as Delta Comfort+, which provides travellers with access to Sky Priority boarding, dedicated overhead bin space, extra legroom, superior snacks, free drinks, and complimentary premium entertainment.

The main cabin features On-demand personal entertainment with extensive contents through Delta Studio. Sleep kit and a bottle of water are also available on top of the food and beverage service throughout the flight.

Highlights: Delta One customers can enjoy meals designed by Chef Michael Chiarello from Napa Valley, California, as well as Australian products, which include Australian King Prawns and Barramundi for entree options, flavoured ice cream dessert from Serendipity, and Australian cheeses for its cheese selection.

In the Main Cabin, mid-flight snacks offered include pizza and TimTam biscuits, and pre-arrival breakfast options feature two hot meals. Fresh-brewed Starbucks coffee is offered throughout cabin.

LAX special features: In June this year, Delta completed a three-year, $229-million refurbishment of Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport. This includes expansion and refurbishment of Delta Sky Club and the opening of Delta’s first exclusive check-in area, officially named Delta ONE at LAX, that includes a dedicated curbside drop-off, a private check-in, expedited security and personalised customer services. All Delta One customers flying Sydney can use the Delta ONE at LAX services.

Additionally, a renovated Delta Sky Club offers more space and an improved customer experience, including 100 additional seats; new shower suites and renovated bathrooms; an updated food area with cafe seating; and new furnishings and fixtures. Sky Club is located between gate 53 and 55, where Delta One customers on Sydney- Los Angeles flights can use on a domestic connection or before the departure for Sydney.

 

Qantas Airways

AU-LAX services: Qantas flies its flagship Airbus 380 and Boeing 747 to LAX from Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne a combined total of 24 times per week (excluding seasonal or additional services beginning in December).

Classes offered: First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy; First cabin features 14 private suites with luxurious lie flat beds, The upper deck Business cabin sports an enhanced version of the Skybed sleeper seat in a two-two-two layout, Premium offers a two-three-two configuration with recline and legroom, and Economy features comfy seating large screens and four self-service bars.

Highlights: Menus in Business and First are designed by renowned Australian Chef Neil Perry, along with The Qantas Rockpool Sommeliers (a new team of wine experts and mixologists) who select the wine, Champagne, spirits and other beverages for Qantas domestic and international flights and lounges.

Premium Economy offers a Neil Perry inspired menu, with premium style meals, including a choice of two main courses. Meal services are complemented with premium wines, and customers have access to additional refreshments during the flight.

Qantas offers signature pyjamas in both its First and Business International cabins designed by Peter Morrissey.

LAX special features: Qantas offers two lounges at LAX in the Tom Bradley International Terminal, a First Lounge and a Business Lounge.

The contemporary design of the Business Lounge reflects Californian culture combined with signature elements from each airline, featuring a communal fireplace to relax and socialise around and a central glass atrium providing natural light and space.

The new spacious and luxurious First Lounge is based on the flagship multi-award winning Qantas First Lounges in Sydney and Melbourne, and offers faster WiFi, wireless printing, cable television, two private work suites and seven shower suites featuring Aurora Spa ASPAR products.

 

United Airlines

AU-LAX services: United currently operates a daily B777-200 service from Sydney to LAX. The airline will replace its B777-200s with B787-9s on this route, effective 28 March 2016. United also operates a daily nonstop service between Melbourne to Los Angeles, also using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Classes offered: On the Dreamliners, United offers a total of 252 seats in two cabins – 48 in United BusinessFirst, with seats arranged in a 2-2-2 configuration, and 204 in United Economy, including 88 Economy Plus seats with added legroom and increased personal space.

The BusinessFirst seat reclines 180 degrees into a 1.98-m lie-flat bed and features a personal on-demand entertainment system with a 39-cm touch-screen monitor.  United Economy and Economy Plus customers enjoy a personal on-demand entertainment system at every seat, providing them with complimentary video, music and video-games.

Highlights: United Airlines recently announced that it will offer economy class passengers two free check-in bags on flights between Australia and the U.S., for bookings from 4 November, 2015 for travel on or after 17 December, 2015.

United also has the industry-leading frequent flyer program, MileagePlus, and its Dreamliner aircraft is equipped with On-board satellite-based Wi-Fi.

United expanded the primary complimentary economy meal to a hearty three-course service, and offers beer and wine at no charge in United Economy on intercontinental flights with multi-course meal service.

LAX special features: LAX is an important hub for United and the airline has been making significant on-ground investments, including a major LAX hub investment that promises to deliver a superior experience for customers at LAX.

The redevelopment project will refresh virtually all of its customer-facing space at the airport, offering more of the conveniences and premium amenities travellers’ value. This renovation is happening now and is expected to be finished in December of 2017.

 

Virgin Australia

AU-LAX services: Virgin Australia operates 21 services per week from Australia (Sydney and Brisbane) to the United States together with their alliance partner Delta Airlines. They use a fleet of five Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Classes offered: The Boeing 777 is a three-class aircraft featuring Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

The Business Class cabin has luxurious fully-flat bed seats, a dedicated bar available for guests to relax in throughout the flight and dedicated bathrooms, including a ladies-only bathroom. The Premium Economy cabin has a self-service snack bar reserved for Premium Economy guests as well as dedicated bathrooms.

Highlights: The Virgin Australia Business Class menu is designed by Resident Chef Luke Mangan. It rotates throughout the year and focuses on the seasonal changes.

For the past four years, Virgin Australia has been awarded Best Airline Staff Service Australia/Pacific at the Skytrax World Airline Awards. Winners are selected from over 18 million customer votes from around the world.

In early 2016, Virgin Australia’s Business Class and Premium Economy cabins on board their Boeing 777 fleet will undergo a major redesign. This involves the introduction of new Business Class suites, offering 1-2-1 seating configuration and fully-flat beds.

The redesigned Premium Economy cabin will feature more legroom than any other Australian airline, a plated meal service inspired by Business Class, and a Premium Larder providing self-service food and beverages for the exclusive use of Premium Economy guests.

LAX special features: Eligible passengers have access to the world-class Star Alliance lounge within Tom Bradley International Terminal, with its unique open-air terrace.
