Mineral hot spring

“Shibua- Simple, subtle and unobtrusive. Things are more beautiful when they speak for themselves. ”

Amanemu resort captures this Japanese aesthetic principal perfectly in this luxury getaway 4 hours south of Tokyo by bullet train.

The Japanese philosophy behind its architecture is evident as soon as we arrive in this beautiful place. A simple structure, but a special and evocative one, is the hallmark of Japanese design. The Amanemu space is expansive all around and a deep calmness flowed through us through as soon as we stepped out of the car. The symmetry between YŪgen (profound grace) and the architecture was evident upon arrival. This was a special place.

Each of the 24 Suites measure 99 square metres and feature a private onsen with the tap to access the direct mountain springs (at 60 degrees Celsius!) into an enormous sunken bathtub. Rooms were impeccable presented, with simplicity and the Zen design continuing. The villas have two bedrooms spread across 366 square metres and features a large private onsen and kitchen. The villas are usually booked for families; part of Aman resort philosophy is that families are welcome.

Miyabi (Elegance)

There is a high expectation for impeccable service in a luxury retreat such as Amanemu and so to experience another level of perfection in the customer experience can only be described by the Japanese term “miyabi”, which is elegance, refinement and courtliness. When we returned from the spa and onsen, our shoes (several pairs scattered on the floor) were all lined up perfectly, the draws filled with coffee, tea, and treats, all in symmetry, the towels and kimonos, perfectly folded. When walking up the driveway to dinner, the buggies would stop, turn their lights off so as not to startle our pupils. Each night, a small gift at turn down service- an origami making kit, a beautifully crafted book mark. Miyabi in all that we experienced form a service perspective.

Dining

Dining

In keeping with the latest trends of farm to table, Amanemu focuses on locally grown produce and interestingly the regions gourmet heritage dates back centuries. The local suppliers provide Nabari melons, an array of vegetables, the famous Matsusaka beef and a variety of fresh seafood. Careful preparation and meticulous presentation are crucial elements of Japanese cuisine and the chef at Amanemu did not disappoint. Food is an art form in Japan and we experienced the most exquisite of it in Shima Shi.

Facilities and experiences 10/10

Mineral hot spring

The facilities highlight is the outdoor hot springs (they are strictly not an onsen as its both sexes and swimwear is required) However, it was vast, beautiful and breathtakingly peaceful. Iki (refined style) can best describe the overall space, facilities and experiences. A gym, yoga, stretching classes (maximum of 8 guests) are also available. Private tours to meet the ancient tradition of women free diving for their seafood (the Ama divers) and a visit to the Shrine are must do’s in the local area.

Overall rating 10/10

The Shima Peninsula is home to Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrines and so enjoys a local tourism trade. It’s a hidden gem, and we saw very few westerners there. To enjoy Japanese beauty and aesthetics, in a serene and luxurious resort, is special experience. Immersed in the best of Japanese culture and history for a few days, was a privilege. We highly recommend Amanemu resort for your discerning and sophisticated clients.
