Singapore has been undergoing big changes as of late, shrugging off its old identity as a layover or business travel destination and fast becoming a dining and drinking paradise.

As the country grows into its new role, a whole spate of new hotels have been popping up and existing hotels have been treated to makeovers to meet this new demand.

Novotel Singapore on Stevens

Novotel Singapore on Stevens is nestled at the edge of the bustling Orchard Road area, yet still within easy reach. Featuring 254 guest rooms, three dining outlets and a state-of-the-art Infinity Pool, along with its sister property the Mercure Singapore (see below) it was awarded Gold in the 2018 Melbourne Design Awards for its creative architecture: the shape of the complex is designed to form the Chinese character 人 (Ren) which means “people”.

Located next door to the Novotel Singapore on Stevens, the influence of the nearby colonial Black & White bungalows are seen in the Mercure Singapore’s bold black lines in the lobby, while the bamboo curtains that were used to keep out the hot sun have been replicated in their restaurant for nostalgia. 518 guest rooms with modern design feature art pieces reminiscent of Singapore’s 1960s and 1970s.

Six Senses Duxton is a new addition to the vibrant Tanjong Pagar historic vicinity, uniting a row of heritage trading houses that have been sustainably restored by acclaimed British designer, Anouska Hempel.  49 guestrooms have unique individuality so that no two are exactly alike, but include oriental wallpaper from her personal collection.

Sister hotel Six Senses Maxwell is set to open in late 2018 and will be located just minutes away, with an interior by French architect and designer Jacques Garcia, reflecting authentic colonial-style decor, but with a stylish modern twist.

Hot off the press, Accor Hotels have recently announced they will open a luxury Pullman on Hill Street in the heart of Singapore’s civic colonial district.  The 342-room hotel will be the city’s first Pullman, and will feature a rooftop bar with sweeping views over Fort Canning, the Singapore River and St Andrew’s Cathedral.
