FLIGHTS CANCELLED: Huge snowfall in Queenstown causes disruptions

Looks like Queenstown is having an early spring snow day! But not everyone is taking the opportunity to curl up in front of the heater and build a blanket fort, it seems.

Air New Zealand had cancelled multiple flights in and out of Queenstown this morning and said disruptions are likely to continue throughout the day.

TVNZ reported an unusually heavy snowfall has closed schools, snarled roads and caused power outages.

The airline said customers are “strongly recommended” to consider deferring non-urgent travel today.

“Those who need to travel should keep an eye on the airline’s Arrivals and Departures page for the latest information,” Air New Zealand said in a statement.

“Air New Zealand is not currently able to offer customers the option of travelling by road as many roads in the area are also weather affected.”

Customers due to travel today who are able to make changes to their booking online will be sent notifications outlining how they can self-manage any changes.

“The airline’s contact centre is naturally experiencing very high call volumes… All customers are kindly asked to defer non-urgent calls.”

The airline said it will also introduce additional ticket flexibility, with customers who no longer require to travel automatically given the option to transfer their booking to another date or hold the fare value in credit for up to 12 months toward future travel without the need to advise our contact centre today.

They can also change their travel to another Air New Zealand domestic destination or apply for a refund.

The airline recommends customers ensure they are subscribed to Air New Zealand’s Travel Alert service to receive ongoing updates.
