Chaos in the Capital, Jakarta submerged

Heavy rains causing mass flooding in Jakarta has displaced close to 6000 people in the Indonesian capital, with more expected as further bad weather is predicted for coming days.

Garuda Indonesia is waiving fees for any inbound or outbound cancellations or changes from the country’s main gateway, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport until Feb 13, however the airline told Travel Weekly all flights are operating as per schedule.

“Flights in and out of Jakarta to Australia are all running and schedules are on time today,” a spokesperson said.

Reuters reports the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency saying almost the floods, which hit the city hardest on Monday, directly affected 16,000 people.

Many parts of Jakarta remain submerged, causing traffic chaos throughout the city and shops to close, as workers were unable to commute.

Reuters reported the meteorological agency said Jakarta could continue to see heavy rains until Thursday.
