Booking.com partners with translation service to help fight FOMO

It turns out travellers are suffering from a serious case of FOMO.

If you haven’t heard, FOMO stands for ‘fear of missing out’ and according to new research from Booking.com, of the 20,000 global travellers they surveyed, two-thirds of them (63 per cent) said they don’t believe they’re making the most of their travel. As a result, they believe they’ve ‘wasted’ their holiday.

The research also revealed that Aussies, in particular, said the key obstacles in their travel experiences included language barriers, finding the right accommodation and the fear of unfamiliar situations in foreign countries.

67 per cent of Aussie travellers feel they are not adventurous enough on holiday and 77 percent said they want to travel ‘freely with no regrets’.

The good news is technology is making leaps and bounds to help travellers overcome these fears and over half of those surveyed admitted to using technology frequently while travelling to gain local insight.

With this in mind, Booking.com have teamed up with ili, the world’s fastest offline translation device to help travellers overcome these travel fears.

The ili devices translate English into three language outputs including Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin in a little as 0.2 seconds without internet connection. These devices can help with simple interactions such as asking for directions to locations off the beaten track or ordering local food and even chatting with the locals.

Another fun thing that came out of the research is a list of the top five trips people would like to revisit so they can experience travel to the fullest.

1. Road trip, with a whopping 67 per cent of Aussies saying they would like to get back on the road. This is particularly popular with younger people, with a third of Generation Z (18-24-year-olds) intending to take a road trip as their next holiday.

2. Last minute trip, 38 per cent.

3. Solo trips have seen a surge for Baby Boomers, with 40 per cent having taken a solo trip in the last year and a further 21 per cent planning to take one in the future.

4. Long distance train journey, 32 per cent.

5. Backpacking or hiking trips are also back in vogue, attracting 30 per cent. Baby Boomers (55 to 64 year olds) seem to be looking for more adventurous travel with a fifth (20 per cent) intending to go backpacking or hiking on their next trip.
