Bali booze ban a possibility

Boozing it up in Bali for Aussies has pretty much become a rite of passage for young travellers on their first trip away, however one of Australia’s favourite party destinations is about to be hit with one massive hangover if the ban of alcohol is approved.

The radical change comes as Indonesia is considering a new law that would ban the production, distribution and consumption of alcohol across the country, including in Bali.

Representatives for Indonesia’s tourism and hospitality industries fear the move would crush Bali’s tourism industry, and worse still, the prohibition cause sales in bootlegged booze to skyrocket, with potentially deadly consequences.

Political groups in Indonesia are pushing for a nationwide prohibition of drinks containing more than one per cent of alcohol. If passed, the law would be the first of its kind in Muslim-majority Indonesia.

The sale of alcohol in mini marts in Bali has already been outlawed, striking a blow for the tourism industry as travellers complained about how difficult it was to find booze.

There may be some exceptions to the booze ban for travellers, customary activities and religious rituals.

Should the ban go ahead, maybe it opens the doors to a new type of holiday in Bali, the detox holiday – booze free and healthy.

If the ban does go ahead, do you think travellers will look for new destinations and avoid Bali?
