An Australian man has died after falling overboard on a cruise ship bound for the US Virgin Islands.

The man fell from Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas ship on Wednesday while on a cruise from Miami to St Thomas.

Some media outlets have reported that the male passenger has been identified as Jon Pfahl, a 37-year-old entrepreneur who was on holiday with his wife and children at the time.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Travel Weekly: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred on the Symphony of the Seas en route to St. Thomas.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones for their loss, and our care team is providing support and assistance during this difficult time.

“Upon the initial report that an Australian adult male had gone overboard, our ship immediately turned, launched a rescue boat, and conducted a full-scale search. We are working closely with authorities and will continue to assist in their investigation.”

Travel Weekly has approached Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for comment.
