Aussie travellers seek luxury close to home

Australia and Asia top luxury-for-less destinations for Aussie travellers according to the latest Hotel Price Index from Hotels.com.

Despite the decline in the value of the Australian Dollar across 2015, the latest Hotel Price, which compares hotel prices paid in 2015 compared with 2014, revealed plenty of cities where five-star luxury was available for less than $200 per night for Aussie travellers.

Siem Reap, Cambodia, the gateway to the ruins of Angkor Wat, came out on top as the best-value destination overall for five-star luxury. The average price paid for a hotel room in Siem Reap was $129 per night.

Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur was the second-most affordable for five-star accommodation where the average price paid for a five-star hotel room was only $168 per night.

The good news for Aussie travellers was that two Australian cities were next on the list with Adelaide, the city of churches, ($190) and tropical Darwin ($197) taking out third and fourth spot respectively for the best-value five-star hotels.

The beachside town of Pattaya in Thailand rounded out the top five list and recorded an average price of $198 per night for a five-star hotel room.

The HPI is a regular report on hotel prices in major destinations across the world, tracking the movement in prices that people actually paid for their accommodation and providing valuable insight into the reasons behind these changes. The data is drawn from bookings made on the hundreds of thousands of hotels on the Hotels.com websites worldwide.

Hotels.com brand regional director, Australia, New Zealand & Singapore, Katherine Cole, said “while three Asian cities made the top five list, the good news is that Aussie holiday-makers need to only look at their own backyard to experience premier accommodation without breaking the bank.”
