Airlines plan Bali recovery flights

Airlines plan Bali recovery flights

Mount Rinjani on the Indonesia island of Lombok continues to erupt, but flying conditions in the vicinity of Denpasar Airport have improved today giving some Aussies a chance of returning home.

Virgin Australia is planning to operate a number of flights from Bali to Australia today to enable guests to return to Australia, provided that conditions do not deteriorate. However, all services departing Australia for Bali today remain cancelled.

“As Mt Rinjani continues to erupt and flying conditions remain unpredictable in the days to come, our priority is to bring guests home from Bali, rather than fly more guests in who could potentially be delayed in returning home due to ongoing eruptions,” a statement said.

Jetstar also responded to the improved flying conditions by confirming its plans to operate up to four recovery flights from Bali today however its scheduled services to and from Australia remain cancelled for today.

Yesterday, the carrier operated four services from Australia to Bali to recover customers who had been disrupted, but these were turned around due to the ash cloud being too close to Denpasar Airport for safe operations.

“We take a conservative approach, putting safety before schedule, and only operate services when our senior pilots and meteorologists deem it safe to do so,” it said. “We know this is a frustrating time for everyone. We are doing everything we can to get customers home.”
