Air NZ shares V-Day stories with a twist

Because Valentines Day isn’t all about roses and romance, Air New Zealand has stolen our hearts in a new campaign aimed at celebrating all relationships, near and far.

The airline has started the hashtag #GoingTheDistance, and is asking people to share who they’ll miss most on February 14, whether it’s your nan on the other side of the world, your best friend travelling abroad or you lover in another city.

“It’s our privilege to reunite loved ones,” said the national carrier in a video release.

“Husbands, daughters, best friends and cousins. Parents, grandparents and long-lost lovers. Tell us who you’ll be missing this Valentine’s Day, and why.”

Since the #GoingTheDistance callout was posted on their Facebook page, the airline has been flooded with stories of separated hearts.

Kiwi mum Margaret Takoko said she was missing her son, “He lives in Sweden and we have been #GoingtheDistance for 9 years now. We have seen each other once in that time. Photos aren’t hugs!”

Richard Foulkes said family commitments were keeping him and his loved one apart, adding, “I’m home in NZ looking after mum and dad with their dementia, whilst he is looking after his mum in London. Eight months feels like forever.”

Briana Weaver said she longed for her kids to meet her family, posting, “I’m missing my father and brother in England. I haven’t seen my older brother once in 11 years – he has never met any of my four children.”

But it’s not the first-time Air New Zealand has gotten involved in reuniting loved ones. In February last year, it flew US WWII veteran Norwood Thomas to meet his long-lost English sweetheart after 70 years apart.
