Travel Corp watches Egypt ahead of planned return

The Travel Corporation continues to monitor the situation in Egypt in advance of its proposed September return to the destination, as ongoing civil unrest places question marks over an imminent tourism recovery.

The company announced its intention to re-enter the country last month, following the recent presidential election.

Contiki and Busabout are set to resume itineraries in the destination in September with Trafalgar and Insight to return in January. Uniworld meanwhile will re-commence Nile cruises in September 2015.

However, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller service currently has a “do not travel” warning on Egypt.

“We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Egypt due to ongoing civil unrest and the threat of terrorist attack,” it says on its website.

“Australians in Egypt who are concerned for their safety should consider leaving by commercial means.”

TTC responded to the ongoing concerns, reiterating chief executive Brett Tollman’s pledge to observe government travel advisories.

“We’ll keep monitoring the situation in the months leading up to when the tours are scheduled to recommence and obviously keep a close eye on government advice,” a spokesperson said.
