Take a haunted holiday

Take a haunted holiday

Halloween is slowly creeping up, ready to jump out and terrify us, and so the team at Viator.com has collated its favourite scary sites for travellers after a bit of a thrill.

Ranging from ghost walking tours to cemetery visits, Viator’s list takes you from New Orleans to London and the Gold Coast, on the quest to find something horrifying enough for Halloween.

Kicking off in Australia, ghost tours are a favourite, with Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Port Arthur leading the way.

With tours starting after dark, guides lead guests through haunted pasts of the chosen city, heading to locations such as Pentridge Prison in Melbourne, through Port Arthur’s penal colony history, and the Southport General Cemetery on the Gold Coast.

On the other side of the world, travellers can take a day trip from Boston to Salem Witch City, immersing themselves in infamous witch trials, the general history of Salem, and the Salem Witch Museum.

Down in New Orleans, you can tour one of the city’s most haunted cemeteries, St Louis Cemetery No. 1, before heading to the tomb of the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, in case you’ve ever been curious about the evolution of voodoo.

Over in Europe, discover Rome’s quirky, slightly spooky sights on a 3.5-hour walking tour of the underground catacombs, Capuchin Crypt and the Basilica of San Clemente.

The tour showcases the best of Rome’s attractions hidden beneath the city, such as a crypt made of monk’s bones and ancient churches.

And a haunted holiday wouldn’t be complete without exploring the eerie streets Jack the Ripper once hunted, or the former execution site of Smithfield Market, where you’ll learn about the bloodthirsty Sweeney Todd and the Cock Lane ghost.
