Australian arrivals to Tahiti bounced back to pre-global financial crisis levels in 2012 with numbers up 40% on the lows of 2009, latest figures have revealed.

The number of Aussies that visited the French Polynesian destination rose 24% over the year, marking the third largest increase to a destination from the local market after Japan and Nepal.

Tahiti Tourisme Australia director Robert Thompson said the tourism body was "thrilled" to see visitor numbers return to pre-GFC levels.

"From what we've already seen this year and looking at forward bookings, it's a trend that we expect to continue throughout 2013," he said.

Thompson identified May and June as the most popular months for travel to the destination in line with Australians' desire to escape winter.
